CBI books six customs officers in Bengaluru in gold missing case
Bengaluru: The CBI has booked six customs officials in connection with the alleged disappearance of gold weighing 2.6 kg from a warehouse at the airport in the city.
The gold was seized at the Kempegowda international airport here from 13 passengers between June 8, 2012, and 26 March 2014.
On October 12, 2020, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered a case against two assistant commissioners, three superintendents of central tax, and another officer.
In its report, the CBI stated that the Directorate General of Vigilance of Hyderabad Zonal Unit of Customs department had conducted an internal investigation and found that it was during the tenure of these officials at the airport that the gold went missing.
The six officers who were in charge of the mishandled baggage godown were entrusted with the gold seizure from the passengers, the CBI pointed out.
"They abused their official position and did not carry out the inventory of the gold and did not hand over the yellow metal received from the seizing officers to the MHB officers of the next shift," the CBI said in its FIR.
All the six have been booked under section 409 (criminal breach of trust) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC and 13(1)(c) (fraudulent misappropriation) and 13(2) (criminal misconduct) of the Prevention of Corruption Act-1988.

NEET student hangs self in Rajasthan's Sikar
Jaipur (PTI): A student preparing for the NEET examination allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in a rented room in Rajasthan's Sikar on Friday, police said.
According to the police, the student allegedly hanged himself from a ceiling fan using his sister's scarf while one sister was attending coaching classes and the other was in the bathroom.
He had appeared in the NEET UG exam 2026, which was cancelled due to paper leak, they said.
Udyog Nagar SHO Rajesh Kumar said that the deceased, identified as Pradeep Meghwal, was a resident of Kanika ki Dhani village in Jhunjhunu's Gudha Gaudji area.
He had been living in a rented room in Sikar's Jaldhari Nagar area with his two sisters while preparing for NEET over the last three years.
His elder sister later found him hanging and informed the landlord and police after bringing him down, officials said.
The SHO said the body was kept at SK Hospital mortuary, and a postmortem had not been conducted.
The student's father, Rajesh Kumar Meghwal, told police that Pradeep's NEET examination had gone well and the family was expecting him to score around 650 marks.
Former Rajasthan deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot expressed grief over the incident and linked it to anxiety among students after reports of irregularities and paper leaks in NEET 2026.
Pilot said repeated paper leak incidents and cancellation of examinations were affecting students' mental health and demanded a time-bound investigation and strict action against those responsible.
