Mysuru: The City Crime Branch (CCB) has apprehended four repeat offenders with extensive criminal records in connection with multiple burglary and theft cases across Mysuru, Mandya, and Bengaluru. The accused, who formed a gang while serving time in prison, were released on April 26 and committed eleven crimes, including burglary, robbery, theft, drug peddling, and bike lifting, within four months.

The police have recovered stolen jewellery, firearms, ganja, and vehicles valued at approximately ₹45 lakh. The arrest followed a burglary incident in Sydanahalli, north Mysuru, on June 6, where valuables worth ₹11.4 lakh were stolen. A special team of CCB officers detained one accused in NR Mohalla in mid-July and arrested the other three on KRS Roadside on August 21.

Among the recovered items were 4kg of ganja, a pistol with live bullets, 551 grams of gold, 1,400 grams of silver items, and several vehicles. The offenders, three of whom are from Mysuru and one from Shivamogga, face numerous charges—two with 17 and 18 cases each, another with 36 cases, and the last with three cases.

Mysuru City Police have also initiated a probe to trace the origin of the seized firearms. Although the pistols were not used in any of the eleven crimes, the police are treating the matter seriously. The accused claimed to have purchased the weapons from Ajmer during a pilgrimage in May for ₹1.2 lakh. A case has been registered under the Arms Act, and investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the firearms.

Bengaluru (PTI): Over 60 per cent voter turnout was recorded till 5 pm in both Assembly constituencies in Karnataka, where bypolls were held on Thursday.

While the turnout in Bagalkot was 65.68 per cent, it was 63.04 per cent in Davanagere South.

While the ruling Congress faces the challenge of retaining both seats, the BJP aims to wrest them and deliver a setback to its rival, which is currently witnessing an "internal power struggle" over leadership.

The bypolls were necessitated due to the demise of senior Congress MLAs H Y Meti (Bagalkot) and Shamanur Shivashankarappa (Davanagere South).

A total of over 2.59 lakh eligible voters are expected to cast their votes at around 319 polling stations in Bagalkot, where nine candidates are in the fray.

In Davanagere South, over 2.31 lakh eligible voters are expected to vote across 284 polling stations, with 25 candidates contesting.

The BJP has fielded former MLA and 2023 defeated candidate Veerabhadrayya Charantimath from Bagalkot, and a fresh face, Srinivas T Dasakariyappa, from Davanagere South.

The Congress has given tickets to family members of the late legislators in both constituencies. Bagalkot candidate Umesh Meti is the son of H Y Meti, while Samarth Mallikarjun from Davanagere South is the grandson of Shamanur Shivashankarappa.
