In a recent incident reported from Narasimharajapur taluk in Chikkamagaluru district, the CEN Police have registered a complaint from a bank employee who fell victim to cyber fraud, losing Rs 17 lakh.

The employee informed the police that he received a video call a few days ago from someone claiming to be from the Mumbai Crime Division Police. The caller falsely asserted that a case had been filed against the employee and showed a fake FIR to intimidate him. The fraudster demanded Rs 17 lakh to dismiss the fictitious case and prevent arrest.

Believing the fraudulent claims, the bank employee deposited the requested amount into an account as instructed by the caller, without verifying the authenticity of the allegations with the police.

Upon realizing he had been deceived, the employee filed a complaint with the police on June 10. The authorities registered the case and have initiated an investigation into the matter.

In response to this incident, the Chikkamagaluru District Police issued a press release cautioning the public about the rising trend of cyber fraud involving fraudulent calls threatening individuals with legal action. The fraudsters employ tactics such as presenting fake FIRs and offering to dismiss fabricated cases in exchange for large sums of money.

The police have urged citizens to remain vigilant and advised them to report any suspicious calls or cybercrime attempts to the toll-free number 1930.
