Chikkamagaluru: In a tragic incident reported from Herikere in Vastar Taluk of Chikkamagaluru, five youngsters who had come here to attend a wedding ceremony, died of drowning when they went swimming on Wednesday.

Three of the deceased have been identified as brothers Dileep (24), Deepak (25), and Sudeep (23) residents of Hancharvalli village near Vastar. The other two have been identified as Sandeep (23) and Raghu, both residents of Vastar village.

According to the reports, Sandeep and Raghu, identified as the brothers of the bride who got married on Tuesday, went swimming with Dileep, Deepak, Sudeep, and two others on Wednesday afternoon. Unaware of the depth of the river, they all jumped into the water and drowned.

Two of the seven people managed to come out of the river and informed locals about the other five who had drowned due to the incident. Locals rushed to the spot but couldn’t trace any of the five other victims. Soon, fire brigade teams were called in for search operation who later traced and recovered bodies of the five victims in the evening.

A case in this regard has been registered at the local police station and investigations are underway.

Gadag: A 28-year-old man who had been missing for four days was found dead in a burnt condition under suspicious circumstances in Gadag district.

The deceased has been identified as Chandru Kuri, a resident of Huyilagol village in Gadag taluk. According to reports, he had left his house on the night of March 24 after receiving a phone call and did not return.

Family members, who had been searching for him since then, later came to know that a body had been found in a charred state under a bridge on the outskirts of Hombal village.

Sources said the condition of the body indicates that it was set on fire, possibly to destroy evidence and conceal identity.

The family has alleged foul play, stating that Chandru may have been called out and murdered. They have also expressed suspicion over the involvement of certain individuals.

Gadag Rural Police have registered a case of suspicious death and initiated an investigation. Police said all possible angles are being examined to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.
