Mandya: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that the state government is committed to protecting the interests of both Kannada and the people of Karnataka.

Speaking at the three-day 87th Akhila Bharatha Kannada Sahitya Sammelana, organised by Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP) in Mandya on Friday, Siddaramaiah emphasised that in an era where the world has become a global village, protecting our identity has become a significant challenge. He highlighted that language thrives when it is actively used, and under his leadership, the government has prioritised education in Kannada and promoted Kannada-medium instruction. Additionally, a comprehensive policy to encourage the use of Kannada in administration has been adopted, making its use mandatory in administration.

He noted that in the last two years, they have spent Rs 506 crore for the cause of Kannada. “We should not speak to outsiders in their language, but inspire and motivate them to learn Kannada," the chief minister stated.

Siddaramaiah opined, “If the imposition of Hindi is not opposed, our identity will be lost.” He added that they fiercely oppose those who are involved in changing or diluting the Constitution, noting that they are are fighting against such forces, as they will divide, and ultimately, destroy the society.

He mentioned that the world’s classics and science books should be translated into Kannada to further enhance the language.

Chandigarh, Dec 21: Some people are feared trapped after a multistorey building collapsed in the Sohana village of Punjab's Mohali district on Saturday, officials said.

The district authorities have launched a rescue operation. Two excavators have been pressed into service as part of the operation.

A fire brigade team is also present.

A local resident said a loud noise was heard when the building collapsed.

It was not immediately known what triggered the collapse.

Senior Superintendent of Police Deepak Pareek reached the spot to take stock of the situation.
