Bengaluru, December 27: KPCC president Dinesh Gundurao said that as there were many able Dalit leaders in Karnataka who have the capacity to become chief minister, the Congress was committed to make a dalit leader as chief minister in coming days.

Speaking at a programme organized in memory of former minister B Basavalingappa, organized by the SC Cell of the Congress at Gandhi Bhavan in the city on Thursday, he said that Basavalingappa who had toiled the welfare of the dalit community had the capacity to become the chief minister. But then, he did not get the chance. But now, there were leaders like DCM Parameshwar, KH Muniyappa, Mallikarjuna Kharge and others who have the capacity of becoming the chief ministers. So, in coming days, they could get the chance and dalits should become chief ministers in the state, he said.

The Congress has no hesitation to give positions for dalits in the party. If the SC Cell identified the honest and hard working party workers and recommended them, the Congress would appoint them for various other sections in the party.  Dalits could get justice only when the Congress party was strengthened. It was a distant dream from other parties, he said.

If the Congress got complete majority, it would be possible to fulfill all demands. Previous Siddaramaiah government had tried to bring in reservation in promotion for dalits act. But it was not implemented completely, for which he was not happy. But it was not possible in a coalition government. So, everyone should join hands to strengthen the party, he said.

The society still has discrimination like upper caste, lower caste. Until and unless, such discrimination was not eliminated from the society, change would not happen. So, the ideologies of Basavalingappa should be a model to others, he said.

KPCC SC Cell president FH Jakkappa, leaders Ashok, MD Jayaram, Kadiram Rathod and others were present.

Bhatkal: The Karnataka unit of the All India Ideal Teachers Association (AIITA) has welcomed the Karnataka government’s decision to strictly ban school children from dancing to obscene songs during educational and cultural programmes in government, aided, and private schools across the state.

AIITA Karnataka State President M. R. Manvi congratulated the government for taking what he termed an important step to preserve the sanctity of education.

“Such decisions to safeguard the dignity of school children and uphold the values of education are the need of the hour. This rule should not be limited to government schools alone but must be strictly implemented in all private educational institutions as well,” he said.

He further urged the government to address other concerns within school programmes.

“The government should not only prohibit obscene dances in the name of school anniversaries, but also ensure that plays and dialogues that incite religious hatred are avoided. Schools should be centres of harmony, not platforms for spreading hatred,” he added.

According to a recent circular issued by the Department of School Education and Literacy, obscene dances are adversely affecting the mental health and moral values of students.

In this regard, schools have been advised to use songs that promote nationalism, positive thinking, the greatness of Kannada culture, and value-based traditions instead of inappropriate content during programmes.
The circular also emphasises that students should be dressed in decent attire.

AIITA also backed the department’s warning that disciplinary action would be taken against head teachers if such guidelines are violated. The association has further demanded that district Deputy Directors of Public Instruction strictly monitor the implementation of these rules.
