Mulbagal: A Dalit youth in Bevahalli village of the taluk committed suicide on Wednesday by hanging himself after he was tied to a tree and thrashed for apparently an negligible reason.
Uday Kiran of Bevahalli is identified as the youngster who committed suicide, post-harassment and apparently unable to tolerate the insult.
Nangali police have registered a case against Raju, Shivaraj, Gopalakrishnappa and Munivenkatappa, who belong to a higher caste and are residents of Petandlahalli near Byrakur hobli in Mulbagal taluk under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. Investigation is underway, said sources.
Background: The complainants have told the police that, in the evening of November 30, Uday and Nagaraju, who were on a two-wheeler, overtook Raju and Gopalakrishna’s two-wheeler. Apparently upset by this, Raju and Gopalakrishna are learned to have stopped Uday’s vehicle in Byrakur and assaulted him.
The complainants have also said that, when Uday and Nagaraju were returning from Kadenahalli, the accused four men again stopped him near Petlandahalli. The accused thrashed Uday and took away his two-wheeler and mobile phones, demanding that Uday and Nagaraju get their parents to collect the things, further harassing them, said sources.
Later, when Uday approached the four accused to get back his vehicle and mobile phone, he was tied to a tree at Racchekatte of Petlandahalli, thrashed and verbally abused on caste basis too, it is learned.
Uday, who was apparently unable to overcome the feeling of harassment and insult, committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree near his house, the sources added.

Dharwad (PTI): A Youth Congress leader was allegedly killed by unidentified assailants after barging into his residence in the city, police said on Saturday. The deceased was identified as Fairoz Pathan, they said.
The incident took place at his house in the Hashminagar area on late Friday, creating panic among local residents.
Police said that four unidentified assailants barged into his house and attacked him with lethal weapons.
After committing the crime, the accused fled from the spot. The entire act has been captured on nearby CCTV cameras, providing crucial leads for the investigation, a senior police officer said.
Upon receiving information, police from the Sub-Urban Police Station rushed to the spot and conducted an inspection. The exact reason behind the murder is yet to be ascertained, he said.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to identify and apprehend the accused.
