Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Sunday issued a stern warning to individuals misbehaving or breaking the law during New Year celebrations in Bengaluru, stressing that strict action would be taken.
"Consider this as a request or even a warning. No one should break the law during New Year celebrations," Shivakumar said while speaking to reporters after a book launch at M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
He added that over 10,000 cameras had been installed across the city to monitor people's movements during the celebrations, though official data reveals the actual number to be 8,000. Of these, 7,500 cameras were installed under the Safe City Project, and 817 cameras were placed in major party hotspots. "During the celebrations, we should maintain decency," he stated.
Shivakumar also clarified that while public events were canceled in light of the mourning for former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's passing, private programs and celebrations would continue as scheduled. He urged the youth to be extra cautious and behave appropriately, highlighting that their actions would be monitored.
Additionally, 11,830 police officers, along with 89 platoons of Karnataka State Police Reserve (KSRP) and 23 platoons of the City Armed Reserve (CAR), will be on duty to ensure safety during the celebrations. These platoons have already been stationed at key party venues to prevent any untoward incidents.
In preparation for New Year’s Eve, Bengaluru police have seized contraband worth Rs 25.20 crore, arresting 73 people, including three foreigners, and opening 54 cases against drug peddlers. The police's canine squad has also been deployed to inspect major party areas, with sniffer dogs being used in security checks.
