Koppal: In a horrible incident five students died after being electrocuted in Koppal's Bannikatte on Sunday morning here. The deceased have been identified as Mallikarjun (16), Basavaraj (16), Devraj Halageri (15), Ganesh (14), Kumar Haider (15).
The incident took place at Devraj Urs Hostel here when five of its students were trying to take the flag off from the barrel after flag hoisting ceremony.
According to the reports the barrel was in touch with a live electric wire, which electrocuted the students killing them on the spot. A case has been registered at Koppal Police Station.
Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa ordered a probe into the tragic incident and announced a relief of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of the deceased.
The hostel was being run at a private building on a rental basis, and all the five were studying in high schools in the district headquarters town, about 350 km from here.
The pole had been erected on the first floor of the hostel building for hoisting the national flag.
Police said they have registered a case and were likely to take legal action against owner of the building, warden of the hostel and local electricity supply company officials.
Speaking to reporters here, Yediyurappa said, "I have ordered a probe into the death of five students due to electrocution in Koppal. I have ordered District Deputy Commissioner to give Rs five lakh to each family as compensation.

Johannesburg (AP): Nine people have died, and at least 10 others were wounded after a group of gunmen carried out a shooting at a South African pub during the early hours of Sunday, authorities said.
The incident occurred just before 1 am in the township of Bekkersdal, which is located 46 kilometres (28 miles) west of Johannesburg. It is the second mass shooting to happen in South Africa in three weeks.
About 12 unknown suspects in a white mini-bus and a silver sedan opened fire at pub patrons at KwaNoxolo tavern, in the Tambo section of Bekkersdal and continued to shoot randomly as they fled the scene, according to police.
