Former Union Minister R L Jalappa passes away
Bengaluru(PTI): Veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister R L Jalappa died at a hospital in Kolar on Friday. He was 96 and was suffering from age related ailments including kidney and lung issues, family and R L Jalappa Hospital sources said.
The veteran leader was undergoing treatment in ICU for some time now, they said, adding that he was also affected by paralysis and blood clot in the brain for which he had undergone surgeries earlier this year.
"He (Jalappa) passed away at 7:30 pm...he was unwell for the last 15-20 days...the body will be shifted to his native village of Tubagere and the arrangements will be made at our farm house there for people to pay their last respects tomorrow. Last rites will be performed at about 4 pm at R L Jalappa college campus in Doddaballapura," his grandson told reporters in Kolar.
The departed leader's eyes will be donated as per his and family's wish, hospital sources said.
Jalappa, a four time Member of Lok Sabha, had also served as Union Minister in the Deve Gowda Cabinet. He is also the chairman of the Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College, Kolar.
Born on October 19, 1925, at Rajanukunte in Doddaballapur Taluk of Bengaluru Rural district, he graduated from Maharaja College, Mysuru.
Jalappa was initially with Congress and quit the party with Devaraj Urs who formed the Karnataka Kranti Ranga, which later merged with the Janata Party. He then joined the Janata Dal and was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1996, from Chikballapur and served as the Union Minister of Textiles from 1996 to January 1998.
He quit Janata Dal and resigned as minister to rejoin the Congress, from which he got re-elected to the Lok Sabha, and remained its member till 2009, winning successive elections.
Before becoming MP and Union Minister Jalappa had served as MLC, MLA and cabinet Minister in the state government.
Beginning his political life from a co-operative field, he was elected as a director and became chairman of State Apex Bank. His organisational skills were recognised by former Chief Minister Devaraj Urs, who made him a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council. He was MLC from 1980-83.
Jalappa, who was MLA from 1983-96, served as Minister in the first non-congress government headed by Ramakrishna Hegde. He served as Minister, Cooperation, Home Affairs and Revenue in the successive governments in the state.
Condoling Jalappa's death, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said he was a senior leader in state politics who strived for social cause by establishing many educational institutions.
"His death is a big loss for gentle politics in the state. May the almighty give the strength to his family to bear this loss," he said.
Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah, state Congress Chief D K Shivakumar, JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy, and several Ministers in Bommai cabinet are among those who expressed grief over Jallappa's demise.

KKR land Green for record-breaking Rs 25.20 crore; Shaw, Sarfaraz go unsold
Abu Dhabi (PTI): Kolkata Knight Riders splurged a record-breaking Rs 25.20 to land top Australian all-rounder Cameron Green even as Indian stars Prithvi Shaw and Sarfaraz Khan went unsold in the Indian Premier League players' auction here on Tuesday.
Green surpassed compatriot Mitchell Starc (Rs 24.75 crore) to become the most expensive overseas player at an IPL auction. This was after Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings were involved in an intense bidding war for him before the latter emerged winner.
KKR also went after Venkatesh Iyer before pulling out of the race against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who fetched the services of the India all-rounder for Rs 7 crore.
As far as Green is concerned, his salary for the season would still be Rs 18 crore (USD 1.9 million) as the rest of the amount will go towards the BCCI's player development programme as per the rules of the auction for foreign players.
Green, who previously turned up for Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, has so far played 29 matches in the IPL to aggregate 707 runs and take 16 wickets.
Shaw, however, went unsold despite his fine run of form in the domestic circuit lately, and so was the case with Sarfaraz, who smashed a 22-ball 73 in a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match for Mumbai on Tuesday.
Big-hitting South African batter David Miller was bought by Delhi Capitals for his base price of Rs 2 crore, but New Zealand swashbuckler Devon Conway, whose base price was also Rs 2 crore, went unsold in the auction.
Seasoned South African opener Quinton de Kock returned to his old base Mumbai Indians for a base price of Rs 1 crore.
A total of 359 players -- 246 Indians and 113 overseas players -- are part of the mini auction pool with the 10 franchises bidding to fill up a maximum of 77 slots, including 31 reserved for foreign players.
