Koppal: Superintendent of Police Ram Arasiddi has said that four suspects have been arrested and being questioned in relation to the murder of Gavisiddappa Naik, a resident of Kurubara Oni in the city, on Sunday night over a love affair.

The SP has told reporters that the arrested men had killed Naik, who belonged to the Valmiki community, using lethal weapons on Sunday night. The primary suspect, Sadiq Hussain Kolkar had surrendered to the police on the same night, while the other suspects, identified as Gesudaraj Patel, Nizamuddin and Mehboob Sikkalgar, have now been arrested by the police, the officer added.

Two swords, one motorbike and clothes have been confiscated from the arrested men, who are being questioned, the SP has said.

Attributing the crime to matters of love and urging people not to pay attention to rumours, Arasiddi said that Sadiq has confessed during questioning that he murdered Naik as he was upset that Naik loved the girl he was in love with. As the girl had also responded to Naik’s attention, the senior members of their respective communities intervened and advised them on the matter, after which, the girl started loving Sadiq, the arrested man is learned to have told the police.

The SP has said that Sadiq is reported to have recorded a video clip of himself holding a sword on the day of the crime and police are investigating the matter. A blood test of the arrested suspects was conducted and it has been confirmed that they were not under the influence of narcotics during the crime, the officer added.

Bengaluru: Leader of Opposition in the Assembly R. Ashoka has accused the Congress government of using the hijab issue to placate what he described as discontent among minority voters after the Davanagere by-election.

In a post on X on Wednesday, Ashoka alleged that the state government, instead of addressing issues such as price rise, corruption, farmers’ distress and law and order, was attempting to retain its minority vote base by reviving the hijab issue.

Referring to the 2022 dress code introduced by the BJP government, which prohibited hijab in schools and colleges, Ashoka said the Karnataka High Court had upheld the policy and emphasised the importance of discipline in educational institutions.

He questioned the Congress government’s move to revisit the issue and asked whether setting aside the court-backed policy to benefit one community could be described as secularism.

Ashoka further alleged that while the government was willing to permit hijab, it continued to prohibit saffron shawls.

He accused the government of dividing students on religious lines rather than treating schools and colleges as spaces of equality.

Drawing a comparison with Mamata Banerjee’s government in West Bengal, Ashoka claimed that excessive appeasement politics had harmed the state and warned that the Congress in Karnataka could face a similar political response.

He said voters in Karnataka would teach the Congress a lesson for what he termed “vote-bank politics” and for compromising constitutional and judicial principles.
