Davanagere: A tragic incident involving the deaths of two men by suicide has been reported from Gummanur village in Davanagere taluk, allegedly triggered by marital discord and subsequent mental distress.

The deceased have been identified as Harish, a resident of Gummanur, and Rudresh from Anekonda. Harish had married a woman named Saraswati around one and a half months ago. The marriage was reportedly arranged with the active involvement of Saraswati’s maternal uncle, Rudresh, who had led the talks between the two families.

According to police sources, within days of the wedding, Harish began noticing changes in his wife’s behaviour. It is alleged that Saraswati later eloped with her lover, identified as Kumar. Following this, Harish was reportedly subjected to harassment, false allegations and death threats by his wife and her relatives.

Unable to cope with the sustained mental pressure, Harish allegedly died by suicide by hanging himself at his residence on Monday night. On learning about Harish’s death, Rudresh, who had facilitated the marriage, reportedly went into severe emotional shock and consumed poison in an apparent suicide attempt. He was hospitalised but succumbed to his condition on Tuesday.

Police have recovered a two-page death note, allegedly written by Harish before his death. In the note, he is said to have held his wife Saraswati and her family responsible for his decision. He reportedly wrote that he had been denied peace since the marriage, was threatened even after his wife ran away with another man, and that his parents were also being harassed. He reportedly stated that his dignity and self-respect were paramount to him.

Officials from the Davanagere Rural Police Station visited the spot, conducted an inspection and registered a case. Further investigation into the matter is underway.
