Bengaluru: The second day of registration for ‘Gruha Jyoti’ scheme which provides up to 200 units of free electricity to all residential households in Karnataka, saw a significant increase as the figures doubled with 1,06,958 people applied for the scheme on Monday, tweeted BESCOM. This takes the total tally to 1,61,958 consumers opting for the much-awaited scheme in two days.

The enthusiastic response saw several people lined up in long queues, few of which lasted around two hours, at the Bangalore One, Grama One and BESCOM offices. An official statement by BESCOM mentioned that there is no need to panic since there is no deadline fixed for registration.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar stated that Congress has always kept its promises and will continue to do so in the implementation of the Gruha Jyoti scheme. He added that applying for the scheme is mandatory to get 200 units of free electricity.

Registrations for the scheme is done on the Seva Sindhu government portal under a special custom-made page (https:sevasindhugs.karnataka.gov.in). For additional information, consumers can approach the nearest electricity office or call the 24x7 helpline number 1912.

Vijayapura: Vijayapura MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal has denied making any derogatory statement about Prophet Muhammad, clarifying that there was a misstatement during his speech at a Ram Navami event in Hubballi. "I did not speak about Prophet Muhammad. I meant to refer to Muhammad Ali Jinnah, but there was a mistake in the speed of speech," he said addressing reporters on Monday.

He alleged that members of the Congress, frustrated by their hooliganism and failure to collect their hafta (extortion) in Vijayapura are using the Prophet as an excuse to speak against me. “There is no culture of denigrating another religion in Hinduism. Our gurus and elders have not taught us that,” he said.

Responding to another controversy involving an audio clip in which he was allegedly threatened, Yatnal said the police are investigating the matter and that those behind it will soon be exposed. “No one can finish me. The Hindus of Karnataka are with me. If someone tries to finish me, the whole state will rise in protest,” he warned.
