Bengaluru: A people’s representative court in Bengaluru on Monday convicted Karnataka BJP MLA Neharu Olekar and his two sons in a corruption case and sentenced them to two-year imprisonment.

Olekar and others were convicted for giving work orders to the MLA’s two sons illegally. They were convicted under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The Lokayukta Police had investigated the case based on a private complaint and filed a charge sheet in the court.

A private complaint was filed against the Haveri MLA Nehru Olekar accusing him of nepotism by illegally giving developmental work contracts for his two sons. The complainant had alleged that work contracts of over Rs 50 lakh were given to the MLA’s sons who were contractors.

Based on the complaint, the special court ordered the Davanagere Lokayukta Police to investigate the case and submit the report.

After the investigation, the Lokayukta Police submitted the charge sheet against nine accused in the case.

After the trial, the special court held the eight accused guilty in the case. Accused number six had died during the course of the trial and the case against the officer was abated.

In the charge sheet, Lokayukta said that officials illegally cleared the bills even before the work was completed.

The alleged corruption took place between 2009 and 2011.

As the sentence was less than three years, the special court granted bail for the MLA.

Mumbai (PTI): Maharashtra's Chief Electoral Officer S Chockalingam on Wednesday appealed to voters across the state to exercise their franchise and not consider the day as a holiday.

"Do not think that one vote will not make a difference. It can make a difference," Chockalingam told reporters here after casting his vote.

Polling was underway since 7 am on Wednesday in 288 assembly seats of the state, where the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti alliance is vying to retain power and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) combine is hoping for a strong comeback.

"All voters ought to exercise their franchise as each and every vote is equally important for the country and the state," Chockalingam said.

"I appeal to all the voters to come out and vote. Do not consider today as a holiday; make your vote count," he said.

Several senior bureaucrats exercised their franchise early on Wednesday, including state Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik, Brihanmumbai Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagarani, Mumbai City Collector Sanjay Yadav and Mumbai Suburban District Collector Rajendra Kshirsagar.

Chockalingam also highlighted the extensive preparations made for the elections, noting that nearly five lakh state government employees and two lakh security personnel were working for more than a month to ensure smooth polling.
