Bengaluru: The committee formed by the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee to examine the revival of student elections in institutions of higher education will hold its first meeting on January 13, Deccan herald reported on Saturday.

Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil, who is also the convener of the committee, confirmed the meeting on Friday. Citing his own experience in student politics, the minister said, many of us began our journey in politics on college campuses. We are also keen on bringing back elections in colleges, and are exploring all possibilities.

The committee will consult representatives of all student organisations on the issue, said the minister. “We will collect feedback from all stakeholders. We want to harness leadership abilities among students.”

Student elections in colleges across Karnataka were banned nearly 36 years ago. However, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar had recently expressed interest in reviving campus politics, following which the committee was constituted to study the feasibility of reintroducing elections.

Patil also reportedly said that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah would take the final decision on whether to extend menstrual leave to girl students.
