Bengaluru: The state government has withdrawn suspension orders of 18 BJP MLAs on Sunday, May 25. This decision was taken in a mediation meeting held under the chairmanship of Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader.
The meeting, held earlier in the day, was attended by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who is also the Leader of the House, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Deputy Speaker Rudrappa Manappa Lamani, Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs H.K. Patil, and Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka.
The suspension was imposed following an incident on March 21, when BJP members created a ruckus in the Assembly, protesting against 'honeytrap' allegations involving Cooperation Minister K.N. Rajanna. The BJP had demanded a CBI probe into the matter. During the protest, 18 BJP MLAs climbed onto the Speaker's podium, tore official documents, and threw papers, actions deemed as showing disrespect to the Chair.
In response to the disruption, Speaker U.T. Khader suspended the Chief Whip of the Opposition, Doddanagouda G. Patil, along with BJP members C.K. Ramamurthy, Dr. C.N. Ashwath Narayan, S.R. Vishwanath, Byrati Basavaraj, M.R. Patil, S. N. Channabasappa, B. Suresh Gowda, Umanatha Kotian, Sharanu Salagar, Shailendra Beldale, Yashpal Suvarna, Harish B.P., Dr. Bharath Shetty, Munirathna, Basavaraj Mattimud, Dheeraj Muniraju, and Dr. Chandru Lamani for a period of six months.
Meanwhile, the suspended BJP MLAs had appealed to the Governor, stating that the suspension was obstructing them from performing their duties as elected representatives. They urged the Governor to direct the Speaker and the state government to revoke the suspension orders.

Bengaluru: Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy on Thursday said he had no objection to Booker Prize winner Banu Mushtaq inaugurating the Mysuru Dasara, diverging from the stand of his party’s ally, the BJP.
Speaking to reporters, Kumaraswamy said his objection was to Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar’s remark that Goddess Chamundi was not just the property of Hindus. “I have no objection to choosing Banu Mushtaq. But saying that temples are not just the property of Hindus is arrogance and will cause big damage to the government,” he said, according to a report published by Deccan Herald.
His son and JD(S) youth wing leader Nikhil Kumaraswamy said the party’s concern was with Mushtaq’s reservations about Kannadambe and other cultural issues. “We respect her and it is not that she should not inaugurate Dasara. Earlier, poet Nisar Ahmed had inaugurated it. Our only objection is to her stand on Kannadambe and related cultural issues,” he said.
On the Dharmasthala issue, Kumaraswamy criticised the Congress government, terming the SIT probe a “drama.” He alleged that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah acted on a complaint by one Dwarakanath under pressure from left-leaning groups.
