Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has decided to scrap the law prohibiting religious conversion, introduced by the preceding BJP government in the state in 2022, with the proposal to withdraw being passed by State Cabinet on Thursday.
The 'anti conversion bill' had been passed in Karnataka in September 2022, in spite of objections from the Congress and the JD(S) members, with the Legislative Assembly passing the 'Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Bill'.
While Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council B K Hariprasad called the Bill unconstitutional, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister J C Madhuswamy assured that the bill was within the scope of the Constitution.
Leaders of the Christian community had also vehemently opposed the Bill.
