Bengaluru: The official deadline for installing High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on vehicles in Karnataka is coming to an end on March 31, and only 29 percent of nearly 2 crore vehicles have affixed them.
The state government had initially set a deadline for November 2023, following a notification issued in August 2023. This mandate applied to vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, emphasising the importance of these new number plates in enhancing vehicle security, preventing thefts, reducing misuse of vehicles, and improving law enforcement.
According to the state transport department, Karnataka has nearly 2 crore vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, which need to get HSRP affixed. Of this, around 58 lakh vehicles have complied with the order, reported The New Indian Express.
An official from the transport department told TNIE that despite repeated extensions, the compliance rate remains low, hinting that, given the situation, another extension of the deadline is likely.
The official explained that early last year, they announced the deadline would not be extended further, and those who failed to affix HSRP would be fined. Fearing enforcement, many began booking HSRP and had them installed on their vehicles.
“However, we couldn’t start enforcing the same as there was a petition in court challenging the HSRP implementation in the state, and we had to maintain status quo and not take any precipitative action,” the official added.

New York/Washington, May 7 (PTI): US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said India has “agreed” to drop its high tariffs “to nothing”.
“I mean, India as an example, has one of the highest tariffs in the world. We’re not going to put up with that, and they’ve agreed already to drop it. They’ll drop it to nothing. They’ve already agreed. They would have never done that for anybody else but me,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.
Trump and visiting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke to reporters as they met in the Oval Office to discuss the US-Canada trade.
“So we’re going to put down some numbers and we’re going to say our country is open for business and they’re going to come in and they’re going to pay for the privilege of being able to shop in the United States of America. It’s very simple. It’s very simple,” he added.
In the past, Trump has called India “tariff king” and a “big abuser”.
Last month, Trump had said that negotiations with India over a bilateral trade deal are “coming along great” and he thinks “we’ll have a deal with India”.
