In a press briefing held in Kalaburagi on Tuesday, Karnataka's IT-BT and Panchayati Raj Minister, Priyank Kharge, asserted that the state's law and order situation remains under control, citing several examples to support his claim.
He addressed the media in response to BJP MP Umesh Jadav's recent statement, alleging a deterioration in law and order, particularly citing "13 murders" occurring since Kharge assumed the role of district-in-charge Minister.
Kharge refuted Jadav's claims, highlighting that many of the murder cases mentioned by the BJP MP allegedly involve individuals closely associated with him. He countered by recalling instances of violence during the BJP's tenure, citing 28 reported murders in the district and referencing an incident and asked “Who drove the tractor over our government’s official in Afzalpur Taluk?”
Drawing attention to incidents in other states, Kharge pointed out 2,209 reported assault cases in Gujarat in 2023, including 36 gang rapes, as indicative of a law and order collapse. Additionally, he mentioned ABVP workers blocking the car of a Union Minister and BJP state president during their own rule, suggesting further evidence of such collapse. Kharge also recalled riots over worshiping at the Ladle Mashaik Dargah in Aland during the BJP's governance.
In a light-hearted remark, Kharge mentioned his prominence in the memories of BJP leaders, likening himself to a household deity, suggesting that they often remember him. Responding to questions regarding MP Ananth Kumar's controversial remark about "changing the constitution," Kharge dismissed the statement, suggesting that Kumar had "lost his mind."
