Madikeri: A tusker met a tragic end by accidentally drowning in the pond of a coffee estate near Jelladaya Ammathi in Kodagu. The incident came to light on Thursday morning.

The ten year old male elephant is suspected to have fallen into the pond, two days ago, while drinking water. As the pond is quite deep, the elephant couldn't climb back to the bank. The labourers of the estate, who visited the pond on Thursday morning, found the floating carcass and immediately reported the incident to the forest officials.

District Forest Officer (DFO) Jagannath, Assistant Conservator of Forest (ACF) Gopal, Range Forest Officer (RFO) Shivaram, wildlife veterinary specialist Dr Chettiyappa and staff visited the spot to conduct an investigation. The carcass of the jumbo was fished out of water and the remains were cremated after an autopsy.
