Mysuru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is set to unveil a initiative on August 29, aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of the Constitution of India. The program, which will be launched in Mysuru, entails the reading of the Preamble of the Indian Constitution across all educational institutions in the state, including schools, colleges, and universities.
Announcing this initiative, District In-charge Minister Dr. HC Mahadevappa highlighted the importance of instilling the values enshrined in the Preamble among the youth. During the inauguration of his new office at the Deputy Commissioner's premises in Siddharth Nagar, Dr. Mahadevappa, who also serves as the Social Welfare Minister, emphasized that Karnataka will become the first state in the nation to undertake such an initiative on a comprehensive scale.
The Preamble of the Indian Constitution underscores principles of justice, equality, and fraternity, pivotal ideals that shape the country's democratic framework. Dr. Mahadevappa stressed the significance of familiarizing the youth with the Preamble to cultivate responsible citizenship and foster unity. This program, he noted, aims to bridge differences and curb conflicts arising from linguistic, religious, or caste disparities.
In the pursuit of nurturing a harmonious society and ensuring that individuals do not merely represent a singular religion or community, the reading of the Constitution Preamble will be made obligatory across schools, colleges, and universities throughout Karnataka.
Dr. Mahadevappa explained the symbolism behind choosing August 29 as the launch date for the campaign. On this day in 1947, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, assumed the role of Chairman of the Drafting Committee and embarked on the monumental task of composing the Constitution.
The event witnessed the presence of key dignitaries, including Mysuru Deputy Commissioner Dr. KV Rajendra, City Police Commissioner Ramesh Banoth, Special Secretary to the District In-charge Minister N Ravikumar, Tahsildar Shivaprasad, among others.

Kolkata (PTI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday described the Waqf (Amendment) Bill as “anti-secular”, claiming that it would snatch the rights of Muslims.
Banerjee, speaking in the assembly, also said the Centre did not consult with states over the matter.
“The bill is anti-federal and anti-secular; it is a deliberate attempt to malign a particular section. It will snatch the rights of Muslims... The Centre did not consult with us on the Waqf Bill,” she said.
The chief minister added that “if any religion was attacked”, she would wholeheartedly condemn it.
Opposition parties have stridently criticised the amendments proposed by the bill in the existing Waqf Act, alleging that they violate the religious rights of Muslims.
The ruling BJP has asserted that the amendments will bring transparency in the functioning of the Waqf boards and make them accountable.
A parliamentary committee has been constituted to scrutinise the contentious bill.
