Vijayapura: Karnataka Revenue Minister, R Ashok, on Wednesday blamed policies set by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh adding that because of the policies, the Centre was unable to provide more funds for flood relief work in the state under NDRF funds.
“The Centre is unable to distribute higher funds to states for undertaking relief works during natural calamities, because of the norms framed by former PM Manmohan Singh’s government,” Ashok said.
He was replying to the question during a press conference on Wednesday on why the Union Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not release Rs. 35,000 crore sought by the State government last year after severe floods.
“However, the Union Government did not show any step-motherly treatment to Karnataka by giving the maximum amount that could be given under NDRF for taking up relief projects during calamities”, he claimed.
It may be noted that the State government had estimated a loss of Rs. 35,000 crore due to last year’s floods and demanded funds from the Union Government.
About the present flood situation in the State, Ashok said that the State government has requested the Union Government to send a team to Karnataka for assessment of the damage.
The team is expected to arrive soon from Delhi for the flood assessment. Meanwhile, the State government officials have been asked to keep the required data ready for submission.
“We have assessed flood loss of around Rs. 4000 crores. We will be giving the details of our financial requirement to the Centre for taking up calamity relief works. I am hopeful that we will get the amount we have sought”, he said.
He claimed that because of the proper coordination between the officials of Maharashtra and Karnataka on the release of water from the dams, the government could prevent loss of lives and properties of the State.

Mumbai (PTI): Under fire over her association with rape-accused 'godman' Ashok Kharat, NCP leader Rupali Chakankar on Friday resigned as the party's Maharashtra women's wing chief.
"Following a discussion over the phone with (NCP president and deputy Chief Minister) Sunetra Pawar this morning, I am tendering my resignation as state president of the Nationalist Congress Party's women's wing," she said in a post on X.
Earlier, Chakankar had stepped down as chairman of the Maharashtra State Commission for Women after her links with Kharat came to light.
In the letter shared on the social media platform, Chakankar said that she had clarified her stand on the Kharat case on the very first day, asserting that she had no direct or indirect connection with his financial dealings or alleged wrongdoings.
Her stand remains clear and firm, and the truth would emerge in the course of investigation, Chakankar added.
The allegations being levelled against her in the media without any evidence are "painful" but the truth would ultimately prevail, she said.
Kharat, who headed a temple trust at Mirgaon in Nashik district, was arrested on March 18 after a woman accused him of raping her repeatedly over three years. A total of eight FIRs have been registered against him since then.
Chakankar was a member of the temple trust.
