Mandya: Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Monday blamed the Congress government’s “bad governance and appeasement politics” for the stone-pelting incident during the Ganesh immersion procession in Maddur.

Speaking to reporters after discussing the matter with the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police, Kumaraswamy said such a large-scale incident had never taken place in Mandya district, which is otherwise known for peace and harmony. “In Nagamangala, miscreants tried to create trouble earlier, and now in Maddur too, the same forces are disturbing the peace. This situation has been created only because of the Congress government’s way of functioning,” he alleged.

The minister described Mandya as a region historically associated with communal harmony and peaceful coexistence, likening it to poet Kuvempu’s vision of a “garden of peace.” He accused the Congress of systematically disturbing this harmony through its policies. “The unrest we are witnessing across different parts of the state today is the direct result of Congress’ appeasement politics. Their administration is pushing the state into chaos,” he said.

Kumaraswamy added that he had already directed district officials to take strict action against those responsible for the violence. He stressed that public property must not be damaged and that law and order should be restored immediately.

Warning the Congress government, he said, “These incidents clearly show the downfall of the Congress has begun. If they fail to realise this, it will become political suicide for them.”

Bengaluru (PTI): The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday quashed the defamation proceedings initiated by the BJP against top Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

The case was filed in 2023, when BJP was in power in Karnataka, following a "corruption rate card" published by the then opposition Congress to claim large scale irregularities prevailing in the state under the saffron party's rule.

Along with Gandhi, now Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, the BJP had accused the then Karnataka LoP Siddaramaiah and Congress state president D K Shivakumar.

Presently Siddaramaiah is the Chief Minister and Shivakumar is his deputy.

Challenging the defamation case, Gandhi had approached the High Court stating that the continuation of the case would be an abuse of law.

The bench of Justice S Sunil Dutt Yadav allowed the petition.

The complainant said that Rahul Gandhi, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar had conspired together to defame the BJP government and made baseless allegation and insinuation.
