Madikeri: Two women labourers buried In land sliding
Madikeri, November 7: Two women labourers buried under the mud when the slope collapsed while digging for constructing a retention walk in the city on Wednesday.
The deceased have been identified as Gowramma (45) of Yelahanka near Belur in Hassan district and Yashoda (22) of Maderahalli in Chikmagaluru.
When the soil was removing in front of the house belonging to P. Ramesh on Race Course road in the city, the slope suddenly collapsed and the two women died on the spot. In the incident, Masha Bhovi, husband of Gouramma, sustained serious injuries. Total six labourers were working for digging foundation for retention wall. At this time, around 20 ft slope collapsed and five labourers were trapped under the soil. Savita and Gonna Bhovi survived as they came out of the mud suddenly. They also succeeded in rescuing another person trapped in the mud. But they could not rescue the three.
Police who got the information rushed to the spot to rescue the trapped persons. After half an hour operation, they managed to rescue Masha Bhovi and admitted him to district hospital.
Later, the police and local people tried to rescue Yashodha and Gowramma. Though the bodies of both of them were retrieved from the soil and rushed to the hospital, they were declared brought dead.
SP Dr. Sumana, MLC Sunil Subramani, CMC Commissioner Ramesh visited the spot and inspected the incident. City police registered a case. Circle Inspector Anoop Madappa and sub inspector Shanmuga led the fire brigade operation along with the local people.

Bearys Institute of Technology Celebrates Constitution Day
(Press Release)- Mangalore, November 28, 2024: The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Bearys Institute of Technology (BIT), in association with the BIT NSS, organized a Constitution Day event under the theme “My Constitution, My Pride.” The event, held at the International Seminar Hall, saw active participation from students, NSS volunteers, and faculty.
The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Pushparaj, a distinguished academic from SDM Law College, Mangalore, who highlighted the significance of constitutional principles in shaping a progressive and inclusive society.
The event commenced with a welcome address by Head of Mechanical Engineering Department Dr. Vasantha Kumar, followed by an inaugural address by Dr. S I Manjur Basha, Principal of BIT.
The ceremony featured notable activities, including the watering of a plant to symbolize growth and sustainability, the oath taking of constitution's Preamble led by Dr. Mohamed Kafeel Delvi.
The Chief Guest, Prof. Pushparaj, was introduced by Dr. Imran Mokashi,Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering.
The event was coordinated by Dr. Mohamed Kafeel Delvi, NSS Program Officer & Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Sandeep Nambiar S, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering.
Saifulla, a student of the 3rd Semester, Mechanical Department, served as the Master of Ceremonies, ensuring the program flowed seamlessly.
