Chamarajanagar: A male elephant was found dead near Erekatte Lake in the Purani section of the Yelandur forest range under the Biligiri Rangaswamy Temple (BRT) Tiger Reserve in Chamarajanagar district, forest officials said.
The deceased elephant is believed to be a tusker aged between 30 and 35 years. Preliminary assessment by the forest department suggests that the elephant may have died following a fight with another male elephant.
The carcass was detected during routine patrolling by forest staff in the Purani section, after they noticed a strong foul smell in the area. A search led to the discovery of the elephant’s body near the lake. Officials said the area showed clear signs of a struggle, including multiple footprints, disturbed soil and marks indicating a clash between elephants.
Senior forest department officials visited the spot and carried out an inspection. The exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem examination, officials said.
