Mandya: Tension gripped Mandya following stone-pelting incidents during Ganesh idol immersion on Sunday night. In response, Hindutva organisations staged a massive protest march on Monday.

Although Maddur Tahsildar Parashuram Sattigeri had imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 from 6 am Monday till 12 noon Tuesday across Maddur town, hundreds of BJP and Hindutva workers defied restrictions and carried out the protest rally.

During the march, a protester allegedly removed a green flag hoisted on a pole at the Flower Circle and replaced it with a saffron flag.

Police resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse the agitated crowd. Tight security arrangements have been put in place across the town, with SP Mallikarjun Baladandi and other senior officers present at the spot to monitor the situation.

Dhaka (PTI): Tarique Rahman was sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh on Tuesday, days after leading his party to a forceful victory in the crucial general elections.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath of office to 60-year-old Rahman at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad instead of Bangabhaban, in a departure from a long-standing tradition.

Earlier in the day, Rahman was elected as leader of the parliamentary party by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party lawmakers.

Rahman's BNP has bagged 209 out of 297 seats, while right-wing Jamaat-e-Islami secured 68 seats in the 13th Parliamentary elections. Deposed premier Sheikh Hasina's Awami League was barred from contesting polls.
