Met dept predicts heavy rains in state on June 6 and 7

Bengaluru, June 3: With the onset of monsoon rains well before the regular time, the Meteorological department has predicted heavy rains across the state on June 6 and 7.
According to the department, coastal Karnataka like Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts, south interior Karnataka like Chikmagalur, Hassan, Kodagu, Mysuru and Shimoga, north interior like Bagalkot, Bidar, Kalaburgi, Raichur, Vijayapura and Yadagiri districts would likely to receive heavy rains on June 6. However, interior like Bidar, Kalaburgi, and Yadagiri, in coastal region, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada, south interior Karnataka like Ballary, Chikmagalur, Hassan and Mysuru would also receive heavy rains on June 7. But some parts of Uttara Kannada, Bagalkot, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Koppal, Raichur, Vijayapura, Kodagu, Kolara, and Shivamogga districts would get normal rainfall, the department said.
Because of the depression in Bay of Bengal and Arabian seas, the monsoon is more active. There is all likelihood that coastal region, malnad, south interior and north interior parts of the state would get heavy rains, it said.
Rain will last for one week
With the entry of south-west monsoon, the state has been getting good rains and this would continue for the next one week, said State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre director Dr GS Srinivas Reddy.
The state is getting good rainfall due to the depression in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian seas. On Saturday, Dharwad has got 101 mm rainfall. Apart from this, south interior Karnataka and Bengaluru have also got good rains. From January to May end, the region has recorded 200 mm rainfall against the normal rainfall of 133 mm. In total, the region has got more than 50 per cent more rains. During May last week, the state got 70 per cent more rain than normal rains. Normally, the state would get 125 mm rainfall from March to May end. But this time, it has got 193 mm rainfall, he said.
It is reported that north interior, south interior, coastal and malnad regions have recorded highest rainfall than the normal rainfall in the last five months. In the last two-three weeks, the state got good rains due to which farming activities are accelerated. As per the weather forecast, the state would be partly cloudy and there are symptoms of getting rains in evening and late night, he said.

Pakistani terrorist killed as army foils infiltration bid in J-K

Srinagar (PTI): The army on Sunday said that it has foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control in Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir, killing a Pakistani terrorist.
"Based on a specific intelligence input provided by #JKP regarding an infiltration attempt, a joint operation was launched on intervening night of 14-15 Mar 26 in Gen area Buchhar, Uri sector," Srinagar-based Chinar Corps of the Army posted on its X handle.
It said troops spotted suspicious movement of a terrorist in the thicket.
"The ambush was readjusted and the terrorist was challenged resulting in terrorist opening indiscriminate fire. In the Contact a Pak terrorist was eliminated. Warlike stores including an AK rifle, pistols and large quantity of ammunition have been recovered," the army said.
The operation was going on till last reports came in.
