Vijayapura: Misinformation and confusion regarding the polling booth staff members’ actions led the voters in Masabinala village of Basavana Bagewadi taluk in the district to destroy the voting machines on Wednesday.

The voters saw the staff at the polling booth getting out the reserve EVMs and VVPAT machines, which are kept for emergency use, and questioned the booth staff about this.

While the election staff, who got the reserve EVMs from Bisnala in Donur village to Masabinala, explained this, the voters were allegedly dissatisfied with the answers.

Assuming that the voting process in Masabinala had been halted midway and that the election staff members were giving them wayward replies when asked to explain this, the locals destroyed the EVMs.

The locals also attacked the staff members and damaged the vehicle of the officers. The incident gave rise to tension in the village.

The voting process, however, continued in Masabinala, regardless of the violent outburst of the locals.
