Mysuru, May 2: Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to come for a debate with him for four minutes about his achievements of four years in office.

Mevani who was travelling across the state as part of the campaign being conducted by the Karnataka State Level Form for Save Constitution, told reporters here on Wednesday that people should know the contribution of Narendra Modi after he became the Prime Minister. The country has been facing lot of problems  like unemployment, farmers suicide, atrocity on dalits, sexual harassment on women and children. So, let Modi discuss about all these issue for just four minutes with him, he challenged.

Before asking AICC president Rahul Gandhi to speak about fifteen minutes about Karnataka, Modi should speak about his four years achievements before the people. It is not enough to have 56 inch chest. He should have the mentality of giving good governance. Modi speaks about Ambedkar, but in his heart, he is still a staunch follower of Manu Smriti. Because of this reason, he does not have morality to bow before the statue of Ambedkar. The agenda of both RSS and BJP is same, he said.

Those who speak about Gujarat Model should be ashamed of themselves because the civic workers and peons working in Gujarat Assembly and Secretariat were suffering due to lack of shelter and they were not being given equal pay. Is that the Gujarat Model, he asked.

The communal Modi government has done a lot of damage to the Constitution. Youth of the country should be aware about the problems being faced by the country. The remedy for this is to keep BJP and other communal forces away from the power, he said.

Modi who had promised of giving jobs to the youth has forgotten his words. Farmers suicide incidents were unabated in the  country. It has withdrawn various subsidies. Small and cottage industries were disappearing from the society and lakhs of employment opportunities in the Railways are being reduced, he said.

As to why Narendra Modi who gives interviews to London media is keeping himself away from Indian media? Let Modi speak for four minutes about farmers suicide, atrocity, unemployment and other problems. But it seems he does not care about this. They are just thinking about changing the Constitution. He would not say that Congress government led by Siddaramaiah did a big achievement. But compared to Gujarat, Siddaramaiah is better, he said.

He would not ask the dalits of the state to vote for any particular party. But he would say that keep the communal forces from power. Karnataka election is between the communal forces and Indians. Communalism would not last longer. It would end from Karnataka itself. 2019 Lok Sabha election would also become the election between communal forces and Indians, he said.

He smelt the rat in the Supreme Court verdict on SC/ST issue. He sees the handiwork of BJP government in that verdict. Harassment and atrocity incidents are happening against dalits for every 15 minutes. The Attorney General who should have argued in favour of SC/ST issue sent his juniors. As they have completely failed to argue before the Supreme Court, they have got this verdict, he said.

New Delhi (PTI): The Supreme Court on Thursday adjourned till after summer vacations a petition challenging the constitutional validity of a provision of passport law and a notification providing for issuance of passport for only a year to an accused on receipt of a 'no objection certificate' from a court.

A bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhyan deferred the matter after it was informed that senior advocate Jayant Bhushan, appearing for the petitioner, was not available.

The summer vacations of the top court will commence on May 20 and the court will resume its sitting on July 8.

The apex court had earlier issued notices to the Centre and Regional Passport Office at Ghaziabad on the plea filed by lawyer Prashant Bhushan, who gets passport for a period of only one year on account of some FIRs lodged against him for allegedly taking part in protests and 'dharna'.

Bhushan has filed an appeal in the top court against the Delhi High Court's January 2016 verdict which had rejected his plea against the provision of the Passport Act.

"Petitioner had challenged the constitutional validity of section 6(2)(f) of the Passports Act, 1967 which states that passport shall not be issued/reissued to a person accused of committing any offence," the plea has said.

"The blanket prohibition in section 6(2)(f) has been partially lifted vide a notification issued in 1993 which states that passport may be issued/reissued if the applicant produces an NOC from the court concerned and if no period is mentioned in the NOC, then the passport shall be issued/reissued for only one year.

The petitioner had also challenged the constitutional validity of this notification," it said.

Bhushan's counsel had told the top court that the provision concerned does not make distinction between serious and not so serious offences and puts equal restriction on accused in getting new or renewed passport and it is violative of the right to equality.
