Bengaluru, Dec 20: In two separate incidents, more than 50 students of government schools fell ill after consuming the mid-day meals in which a dead lizard was found, on Thursday. But all children were out of danger, it is said.

In both the cases, the teachers, with the help of villagers, provided treatment and all children are recuperating in Ballari VIMS and Hunagunda government hospitals.

Bagalkot

Total 12 children fell sick after consuming the mid-day meals at Chikkamagi government school in Hunagunda taluk of Bagalkot district  and suddenly, all the children were given treatment. Now, the children are safe, it is said.

The school has total 156 children from 1st to 8th standard. When the mid-day meal was served, the dead lizard was found in the plate of one of the student Hanumanta of 6th Standard. The student brought this to the notice of the teachers. By this time, around ten students have completed their lunch. When the students came to know about it, they tried to vomit and started feeling uneasiness. Suddenly, they were rushed to Kamatagi primary health centre where they were given first aid. District Medical officer, ZP president Veena Kashappanavar, CEO and other senior officers of the Education department visited the hospital and took stock of the situation. Hospital sources said that the children are recuperating from the incident and are out of danger.

Ballari

In another incident at Agalur in Siruguppa taluk in the district, over 40 children fell sick after consuming the mid-day meals and complained of dysentery and vomit. Suddenly, they were rushed to Karur primary health centre and got the treatment. Since there were no doctors, they were shifted to Ballari VIMS hospital and were being given treatment. All the children are out of danger, sources said.

Mumbai (PTI): Police have arrested a man and seized over 500 grams of heroin worth Rs 2.54 crore in the illicit market from him in Mumbai, officials said on Friday.

The police's Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) made the drug seizure in Santacruz in the western suburbs. The operation was conducted by the Kandivali unit of the ANC on Thursday as part of a special crackdown against drug trafficking in the area, they said.

Acting on specific inputs, an ANC team conducted a raid in Santacruz (East) and intercepted a man. During a search, the team recovered 508 grams of high-grade heroin from his possession, an official said.

The seized contraband, a highly addictive, opioid drug derived from morphine, is estimated to be worth Rs 2.54 crore in the international market, he informed.

Following the seizure, a case was registered against the man under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and he was formally placed under arrest in the early hours of Friday.

The police are currently investigating the source of the drug and trying to identify the intended recipients of the consignment, he said.
