Mysuru: Deputy Commissioner G Lakshmikanth Reddy has constituted a three-member committee to inquire into the axing of 40 fully grown trees on Hyder Ali Road, which had infuriated the citizens of Mysuru and also led them to hold a candle-light protest.

The DC, issuing the order on Monday, said that the panel would be chaired by the Commissioner of the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) and will include the Deputy Conservator of Forests, Hunsur, as a member, and the Executive Engineer of the District Urban Development and Planning Department as secretary, reports The Hindu.

The committee has been directed to probe the matter thoroughly and find if the project to widen the road was essential and if the axing of the trees was justified technically. The committee has also been asked to investigate if all required permissions and clearances had been obtained and if the action complied with the applicable regulations.

The panel has been given seven days’ time to investigate the matter and submit a detailed report carrying the findings and recommendations related to the issue.

Up to 40 trees near the office of the Superintendent of Police had been axed recently, with the officials claiming it to be a part of a road-widening project. The citizens, NGOs and environmentalists, however, had not only expressed shock at the felling of the fully grown trees on Hyder Ali Road but also protested against the move by the government authorities. They had questioned the need to replace green cover with urban infrastructure and also to widen a road that had no traffic congestion problem.

Haridwar (PTI): Six people died and at least two dozen were injured in a stampede at Haridwar's Mansa Devi temple on Sunday, a police officer said.

Haridwar Senior Superintendent of Police Pramendra Singh Dobal told PTI Videos that 35 people had been rushed to a hospital, of whom six died.

The officer said a rumour of an electric current ahead of the spot where the steps to the temple begin sent the devotees panicking, leading to a stampede.

According to officials, the incident took place at around 9.30 am. The State Disaster Response Force and the fire brigade are at the spot, he said.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said he was saddened by the incident and asserted that the situation was being monitored.

"Very sad news has been received about a stampede on the way to the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar. SDRF, local police and other rescue teams have reached the spot and are engaged in relief and rescue operations," Dhami said in a post on Facebook.

"I am constantly in touch with the local administration in this regard, and the situation is being constantly monitored. I pray to Mata Rani for the safety of all the devotees," he added.
