Udupi: Praveen Arun Chowgule, a 39-year-old Air India staff member arrested in connection with the brutal murder of a mother and child in Nejaru Tripti Layout, is currently undergoing intensive interrogation by the police, reports have added.

Chowgule had been on the run following the murder and was apprehended by the police on November 14 in the Kudachi Police Station area of Rayabhaga Taluk, Belgaum.

Following his arrest, the accused was produced before the court on November 15, and the court ordered him to be in police custody for 14 days. During this period, the police are conducting thorough interrogations at an undisclosed location, aiming to gather sufficient evidence and information related to the crime.

The police investigation includes inquiries into whether the accused was under the influence of drugs at the time of the murder or if he is a drug addict. Additionally, efforts are on to recover the knife allegedly used in the crime.

Concerning the developments in the case, a crowd gathered near the house where the crime occurred, anticipating that the accused might be brought to the location for further investigation. However, as of the latest information, the police had not brought the accused to the site, disappointing the onlookers.

New Delhi (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday termed the BJP's victory in Bengal and Assam assembly polls a "theft" of the mandate, and a big step forward in the saffron party's mission to "destroy" Indian democracy.

Gandhi also came out in support of the TMC, which has been trounced by the BJP in the polls, and urged those gloating over the loss of Mamata Banerjee's party to put petty politics aside.

"Some in the Congress, and others, are gloating about TMC's loss.They need to understand this clearly - the theft of Assam and Bengal's mandate is a big step forward by the BJP in its mission to destroy Indian democracy," Gandhi said in a post on X.

"Put petty politics aside. This is not about one party or another. This is about India," he said in his post.

The BJP ousted Trinamool Congress from power in Bengal and captured power for the third time in a row in Assam in results of assembly polls declared on Monday.
