Somawarpete, November 7: Opposing the Tippu Jayanthi on November 10, Anti-Tippu Jayanthi Action Committee called for a voluntary Kodagu bandh on November 10. The committee would hold a protest in Somwarpet and Virajpet on November 8 and submit memorandums to tahsildars urging the government to drop celebration of Tipu Jayanthi.

On November 9, a district level protest would be held in madikeri and peaceful protest would be held on November 10, Committee told reporters here on Wednesday.

He appealed the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Bus, Vehicles, Auto Owners Association, various organizations and general public to extend their support to the bandh. Tipu Sultan was not a freedom fighter. He was a king. He had converted the Hindus into Islam. He had demolished temples, assassinated Kodavas. Such a cruel king should not be remembered, he said.

Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy had earlier said that he would not allow Tipu Jayanthi if JDS came to power. Even now, there was a chance to cancel the programme, he said.

People of the district have been facing problems due to natural disasters. If the law and order situation was disturbed in the district in the name of Tipu Jayanthi, the government and the district administration should hold the responsibility, he demanded.

Committee members S.G. Medappa, M.N. Kumarappa, Manu Kumar Rai, Sharath Chandra, S.R. Somesh were present at the press conference.

New York/Washington, May 7 (PTI): US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said India has “agreed” to drop its high tariffs “to nothing”.

“I mean, India as an example, has one of the highest tariffs in the world. We’re not going to put up with that, and they’ve agreed already to drop it. They’ll drop it to nothing. They’ve already agreed. They would have never done that for anybody else but me,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

Trump and visiting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke to reporters as they met in the Oval Office to discuss the US-Canada trade.

“So we’re going to put down some numbers and we’re going to say our country is open for business and they’re going to come in and they’re going to pay for the privilege of being able to shop in the United States of America. It’s very simple. It’s very simple,” he added.

In the past, Trump has called India “tariff king” and a “big abuser”.

Last month, Trump had said that negotiations with India over a bilateral trade deal are “coming along great” and he thinks “we’ll have a deal with India”.
