Bengaluru: In a significant development for the tribal communities in the deep forests of Chamarajanagar district, more than 1,800 households are reportedly set to receive permanent electricity for the first time. Officials have reportedly noted that the project, which aims to enhance the quality of life for these residents, is being executed with their consent.

The initiative, spearheaded by the district administration at a cost of Rs 42 crore, will utilise underground cables for power supply, as reported by Deccan Herald on Monday. This decision was made after the forest department rejected plans for overhead cabling. Once connected to the power grid, lamps will illuminate streets and allow households to enjoy the conveniences that come with having electricity, such as operating home appliances or any other equipment.

Shilpa Nag, the Deputy Commissioner of Chamarajanagar, explained that previous attempts to provide independent solar connections were limited in scope and challenging to maintain due to the remote and forested locations of these households. "Through this comprehensive project, we want to enable full electrification to benefit nearly 1,854 tribal households living in remote parts so they can enjoy a better quality of life. All of this is happening with their consent and necessary permissions,” Shilpa was quoted as saying by the news outlet.

She further noted that, under the Chief Minister's direction, the work has been accelerated, adding that cabling is expected to commence within the next 15 days and be completed within four months.

The district administration worked with the Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation Limited (CESC) and the forest department over the past six months to develop the proposal and secure the required approvals. The project is reportedly in its final stages of obtaining forest clearance from the forest department, which is clearing each of the nine proposals that covers 22 haadis (settlements).

Santhosh Kumar, Deputy Conservator of Forests, MM Hills Division in Kollegal, noted that approvals for two remaining areas are pending but will be done soon. The proposals have been carefully modified to minimise disturbance to animal corridors.

New Delhi (PTI): A day after the fatal stabbing of a Delhi Police constable, the main accused in the case was shot dead in an encounter with the personnel of the force in south Delhi's Sangam Vihar area, officials said on Sunday.

Constable Kiran Pal was stabbed to death by three people on Saturday while on night patrolling duty in southeast Delhi's Govindpuri area. Two accused -- Deepak Max and Krish Gupta -- were arrested later in that day.

The third accused, Raghav -- who stabbed Pal with a knife -- was hiding in Sangam Vihar, a senior police officer of Special Cell said.

Acting on specific information, teams of NDR of Special Cell and Narcotics Cell of South East District, went to the area connecting Sangam Vihar and Surajkund Road late on Saturday night, the officer said.

The accused was identified and asked to surrender. He, however, opened fire at the police personnel who retaliated in self-defence and injured the accused.

"He was immediately taken to the ESIC Hospital, Okhla, where he died," the officer said.

A pistol with two cartridges have been seized, the police officer said, adding no police official was injured in the encounter.

Constable Kiran Pal, posted at Govindpuri Police Station, was on night patrolling duty when he stopped three people riding a scooty in the early hours of Saturday.

The accused threw stones at the constable to evade arrest but he managed to waylay them by putting his bike in front of their vehicle, the officer said.

The constable also took away the keys of the scooty and started questioning the trio during which the accused stabbed him, the officer added.
