Shivamogga: HP Manjappa, head of the Vanashri Residential School in Sagara, was detained by the police on Saturday, in relation to the unexpected and suspicious death of 13-year-old Thejaswini, a student of the school.

Thejaswini, a Dalit girl from Class 8, who was a native of Shivapura village in Sorab taluk, had been admitted into Vanashri, a private residential school situated on Varadahalli Road of Sagara town, in the second week of June. The other students at the school have said that, Thejaswini, who had been forced to drink a lot of water by Manjappa, fell seriously ill on Thursday. She was taken in the school van to the hospital, where she died.

The deceased student’s parents told reporters, “Thejaswini’s health was fine when she joined the residential school. That she fell ill suddenly and died gives rise to a lot of suspicion.” They urged the police to investigate the case and ensure that they get justice after having lost their child.

Social activists have also been demanding to know the reason for the girl’s sudden death. The activists, along with Thejaswini’s parents and the residents of Shivapura, staged a protest on Saturday outside the residential school building, demanding investigation into the matter of the girl’s death and legal action against the guilty.

While the police stopped the protesters as they attempted to forcibly enter the school building, they have now detained Manjappa for questioning in relation to the case.

Bengaluru: President of the Karnataka State Contractor’s Association D Kempanna died of heart attack at his residence in Jyothipura, Bengaluru, on Thursday. He was 84.

Kempanna had been in news following his allegation during the earlier Basavaraj Bommai-led BJP government in Karnataka that contractors were forced to pay a 40 per cent commission to officials for the projects. His allegation had made way for heated discussions and debates across the state as well as arguments between political parties prior to the Assembly elections of 2023.

Condoling the demise of Kempanna, Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah posted on his personal ‘X’ account on Thursday, “The news of the death of Kempanna, President of the State Contractor’s Association, is shocking. He had not only brought to light the 40% commission scam during the earlier government’s tenure, which made headlines across the country, but also fought boldly against corruption in contracts. In his death, we have lost a bold fighter who refused to bow before any sort of pressure or enticement. I pray for the departed soul to rest in peace and the bereaved family to have strength to bear the loss.”

Deputy CM DK Shivakumar also offered condolence to Kempanna’s family in his post on his personal ‘X’ account on Thursday. He also recollected Kempanna’s fearless fighting spirit against corruption, calling the Association President as ‘direct and unbiased’ in expressing his views.
