Tumakuru: A pregnant woman and her twin newborn children died in the city as the medical staff of the Tumakuru district hospital reportedly failed to provide her timely treatment.

The locals have accused the staff at the hospital of turning away the pregnant woman, Kasturi, who had been a resident of Bharati Nagar in the city, when she visited the hospital at night on Wednesday with labour pain.

Kasturi was the mother of a girl and was a destitute. She was going through her second pregnancy. With the financial aid provided by neighbours, she visited the district hospital, but the staff at the hospital reportedly refused her care, claiming she had not gotten various records.

The victim, who was undergoing labour pain, returned home without receiving timely care at the hospital. She went through labour at home in great pain, due to which, Kasturi and her two twin newborns died, the neighbours have said.

When the neighbours visited Kasturi on Thursday morning, they learned that the mother and her infants had died, and are said to have brought the matter to the notice of the NEPS police.

“The trio could have been saved had the pregnant woman received immediate care when she visited the district hospital with labour pain. The mother and her children have died due to the negligence of the staff of the hospital,” Nagendra, activist of the Karnataka Rashtra Samiti (KRS) party, has said.
