Kalaburagi: A prisoner at Kalaburagi Central Jail secured his release by paying the court-ordered fine using the wages he earned while incarcerated.
Durgappa (65), a resident of Jantapura village in Lingasugur taluk, Raichur district, had been serving a life sentence since 2013 in connection with a 2012 criminal case. In addition to the sentence, the court had imposed a fine of ₹1.10 lakh, with an additional penalty of one year and six months in prison if he failed to pay the amount.
Although Durgappa was set to be released in 2024, his financial situation and lack of support from relatives, who were themselves facing hardships, left him unable to pay the fine.
During his time in prison, Durgappa worked as a cook, and jail officer R. Anitha discovered that he had accumulated ₹2.80 lakh in earnings, deposited in a bank account. However, withdrawing the funds posed a challenge as the account was in another location.
Recognizing the situation, officer Anitha coordinated with bank officials and arranged for staff to accompany Durgappa to withdraw the required amount. He then paid the ₹1.10 lakh fine through the bank, following which the court issued his release order.
After completing all formalities, Durgappa was freed and reunited with his relatives.
