Sagara: A request for euthanasia has reportedly been made by a local couple, apparently unable to bear the torment of government officers with regard to their property.
Shrikanth Nayak and his wife Sujatha Nayak, of Kugve village on the outskirts of Sagara town, Shivamogga district, wrote to the President of India and handed their request to the assistant commissioner on Wednesday, said sources.
Speaking on the matter, the couple said, “We requested permission to release 52 per cent of our own land as approved by the rural and urban development project. The Taluk Panchayat executive officer and the panchayat development officer demanded that we pay Rs 10 lakh to grant permission. We did not bribe the officers. Since ours is an agriculture-based family, we could not afford to do so, too.”
They said, further, “Following our refusal to pay them the demanded amount, the officers have been misusing their authority and harassing us. Our family faced a financial downfall, and I am now facing health problems. Everyone in the family is depressed and helpless.”
Nayak and his wife added, “We are unable to face this torture any further and have requested for permission for euthanasia.”
