Vijayapura: Seven corporators officially joined the Congress party in the presence of District In-charge Minister MB Patil and his brother, MLC Sunilgouda Patil, on Tuesday. This move marks a notable shift in the political landscape of Vijayapura.

Among the seven corporators, four were previously independent, while two were affiliated with AIMIM, and one belonged to JD(S). In the 2022 elections for the Vijayapura City Corporation, BJP emerged as the largest party with 17 seats. Congress secured 10 seats, AIMIM 2, JD(S) 1, and Independents 5.

The Vijayapura District Congress Committee Vice President, Gangadhar Sambanni, expressed his confidence in the party's growing strength. "Today, seven corporators have joined our ranks, adding to our existing independent members. The total count of Congress corporators now stands at 18. During the upcoming Mayoral election, we are confident of electing our mayor," he stated.

During the mayoral election, local legislators also exercise their vote. Out of the six legislators, BJP holds one MLA and MP each, while Congress boasts of two MLAs and two MLCs. "Out of a total of 41 votes, Congress commands 22. This puts us in a favorable position to elect our mayor in the coming days," added Sambanni.

Minister MB Patil, who recently returned from a two-week official tour of the United States, expressed his optimism about the new additions to the party. "Everyone acknowledges that Congress alone possesses the capability to govern in alignment with the public's aspirations. Hence, independents and members from other parties have voluntarily embraced our cause. We are confident that Vijayapura City will experience effective governance in the days ahead," he stated.

Kolkata (PTI): Seven people were arrested from the Parnashree area in the southern part of the city for allegedly running a fake call centre, a police officer said on Saturday.

Acting on a tip-off, police raided a house on Netaji Subhas Road on Friday night and found the fake call centre operating from the ground floor, he said.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused had set up a bogus company using forged documents and posed as employees of an antivirus firm to call citizens in the US, the officer said.

"The callers would gain the trust of victims and then use remote access to take control of their phones or other digital devices. The accused allegedly siphoned off large sums of money, running into millions of dollars, from victims' accounts," he said.

Five laptops, two WiFi routers, six mobile phones and four headsets were seized from the accused, he said, adding that the seven are being questioned to ascertain the full extent of the racket and to identify others involved.
