Bengaluru: KPCC President D K Shivakumar has asked, “Minister Munirathna has invited me to join the BJP, saying, only then would I get to be a chief minister. Does this not indicate a lack of leaders to hold the post in the BJP?”

Addressing a press meet near his residence in Sadashivanagar in the city on Wednesday, Shivakumar reportedly said, “Munirathna asked me to join the BJP, saying I could not become a chief minister as long as I was in the Congress. I am truly delighted by Munirathna’s invite, but the minister’s words also prove that the BJP completely lacks worth becoming a chief minister.”

The Congress state president, referring to the withdrawn controversial order of the DDPI for all pre-university colleges in Bangalore Rural district to send their students to attend the program of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said, “We have no objection to the Prime Minister visiting the state, but the order demanding colleges to send students to attend the event is certainly reprehensible.”

He asked, “Is the BJP in such a pathetic condition as to be unable to get people to attend a program its holds? We would only be glad to watch people come to your event, drawn by the success of your double-engine government in three years. If students are ordered to attend the event, do we understand this to be an educational event?”

When asked about the recent statement by Congress leader Satish Jarkiholi on the term ‘Hindu’ that is drawing severe criticism, Shivakumar said, “Jarkiholi has said that there are documents that prove his words to be true, but I am unaware of any such document. Senior Congress leaders Siddaramaiah, Surjewala and I have clarified that our religion and culture should not be treated with contempt – we do not withdraw this statement. We certainly oppose Jarkiholi’s statement.”

The KPCC president added, “We condemn the words of Satish Jarkiholi regardless of the political benefits it might give the BJP.”

Speaking of his visit to Badami, the leader said that it was his personal matter. “It is true that I went to Bagalkot district, but I do not wish to speak about the reasons as they were purely personal,” Shivakumar insisted.

When a reporter asked the president if the decision at Udaipur to focus on youth is indeed drawing more youngsters, Shivakumar is said to have suggested to the scribe to apply too, adding, “We will support you whole-heartedly.

New Delhi (PTI): The Delhi Police has arrested a man and his son for allegedly murdering his 19-year-old daughter in west Delhi's Hari Nagar area, an official said on Friday.

The case first came to light on April 1 after a PCR call was received around 2 pm, alleging that a woman had been killed by her family members and her body was being taken for last rites, he said.

The accused, identified as Mohammad Maneer (55), a vegetable vendor, and his son Meraj Ali (19), were arrested in connection with the case, the officer said.

The victim had been in a relationship with a man from her native place for the past two years, which was opposed by her father, Maneer and brother Meraj, he said.

"When the girl did not end the relationship despite objections, the family killed her," the officer said.

On April 1, the police said that when their team reached the spot, they found that the woman's body was being taken for burial.

Acting on the input, the burial process was stopped over suspicion of honour killing.

"Police intercepted the family members and took possession of the body," he said.

Police said that the man who had made the PCR told them that the woman was in love with his cousin.

During the inquiry, police also interacted with the PCR caller, who said his cousin, a friend of the deceased, had informed him about the situation and suspected foul play, prompting him to alert the police control room.

The body of the woman was subsequently shifted to the mortuary of Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital for preservation and postmortem.

Police said that both the crime team and the forensic science laboratory (FSL) team were called to inspect the scene and collect evidence.

Police said that, as per the postmortem report, the cause of death was identified as smothering, indicating that the woman was suffocated.

A preliminary inquiry also revealed that the family had initiated preparations for the last rites soon after the woman's death, raising suspicion about the circumstances.

Initial investigation pointed to the family's opposition to the woman's relationship.

"The family members of the woman saw her with the man, and she was taken back home. We got to know that she was beaten up and even locked inside the house for some days," a source said.

Further investigation into the matter is underway, police added.
