Shivamogga: A lecturer in Shivamogga fell victim to an online scam, losing Rs 12.69 lakh after responding to a WhatsApp message offering an opportunity to earn money by providing restaurant reviews on Google Map and YouTube.
The lecturer, who received the message on January 22, clicked on the provided link and joined two Telegram groups named 'Daily Task' and 'Receptionist Priya.' The offer promised daily earnings ranging from Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,700, with Rs 50 per review. The lecturer diligently wrote reviews on the given Google Map and YouTube links, receiving payments of varying amounts between Rs 100 and Rs 225, totaling 17 transactions.
Subsequently, the lecturer received another offer within the group, enticing her to invest Rs 1,000 for returns of Rs 1,300 and Rs 3,000 for returns of Rs 3,900. Despite the considerable investment of Rs 12.69 lakh made between January 25 and 29, the fraudsters failed to fulfill their promises of returns or refund the invested amount.
Upon lodging a complaint, the Shivamogga CEN Police registered a case and initiated an investigation into the matter.
