Shivamogga: Man dies after falling into elephant control trench
Shivamogga: In a tragic incident in Shivamogga taluk, a 32-year-old man died after falling into a trench dug by the Forest Department to control the movement of wild elephants. The incident occurred in Adinakottige village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Tammadihalli Gram Panchayat.
The deceased has been identified as Nagaraj (32). He had gone missing, and his body was later found in the trench following a search operation by his family and local residents.
Following the immersion of a Ganesha idol installed in the village, residents had gathered for a meeting at the local temple in Adinakottige to discuss festival finances. Nagaraj was present at the meeting and left for home afterward. However, he did not return home even by the next morning.
Concerned family members and villagers began searching for him and eventually discovered his lifeless body in the trench near the temple premises by evening.
The trench had been dug as part of elephant control measures by the Forest Department. Locals had previously opposed the digging of trenches close to residential areas, citing safety concerns.
With Nagaraj’s death, villagers are now demanding that senior forest officials visit the site and take responsibility. They have reiterated their objections to trenches being dug near homes.
The incident falls under the jurisdiction of Kumsi Police Station. Police have visited the scene and are investigating.

Bill Gates lauds Andhra's AI-driven growth
Amaravati (PTI): Microsoft founder and Gates Foundation chairman Bill Gates on Tuesday hailed Andhra Pradesh's rapid development, saying it was exciting to see the state's growth being accelerated through AI and technology.
Following his visit to Amaravati, Gates expressed his admiration for the southern state’s innovations across health, agriculture and education.
“Thank you for the warm welcome, N Chandrababu Naidu. It’s exciting to witness Andhra Pradesh’s growth being accelerated through AI, technology, and innovations across health, agriculture & education,” he said in a post on X.
On Monday, Gates had engaged in several activities in the greenfield capital city of Amaravati, beginning with an interaction with the CM and others, reviewing presentations on the use of technology in governance and also a visit to a banana orchard by the Krishna river bank in Undavalli village in Guntur district.
According to the tech czar, India is leading the global digital revolution.
He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Naidu for their key role.
He also heaped praises on Naidu for his long-term vision, saying a majority of IT experts, including many at Microsoft, are from the Telugu states.
