Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar held a meeting in Bengaluru at the Chief Minister's home office on Wednesday. The focus of the meeting revolved around preparations for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

In attendance were prominent political figures, including Dinesh Gundurao, Ramalinga Reddy, MP DK Suresh, as well as various ministers and Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs).

DK Shivakumar, speaking to the media ahead of the meeting, outlined the party's vision for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. He stated, "Our forthcoming objective is the Lok Sabha elections. We have issued directives to our party cadre to foster a spirit of unity and refrain from nurturing grievances, with the ultimate aim of enhancing the party's voter turnout."

He emphasized that the responsibility of determining the party's composition rests with local leaders. Additionally, he noted the influx of individuals from other parties into the Congress, pointing to the surge of new members joining the party ranks.

Shivakumar stated, "Occasionally, one must engage in expedient politics at the local level. It is the prerogative of local leaders to determine the inclusion of individuals within the party. Notably prominent leaders are not being inducted; rather, there has been substantial enthusiasm from members of other parties to join Congress."

Budapest/Washington: US Vice President J D Vance has said that Lebanon was never included in the ceasefire understanding with Iran, describing the confusion as a “legitimate misunderstanding”.

Speaking to reporters before departing from Hungary, Vance said, “I think the Iranians thought that the ceasefire included Lebanon and it just didn’t. We never made that promise.”

He stressed that the United States had not included Lebanon in the scope of the ceasefire at any stage.

His remarks come amid continued Israeli strikes in Lebanon, where more than 200 people were reported killed, even as ceasefire talks between Iran and the US move forward.

Vance said Israel had “offered … to check themselves a little bit in Lebanon because they want to make sure that our negotiation is successful”.

He warned that if Iran allows the situation in Lebanon to affect the negotiations, it could derail the talks.

“If Iran wants to let this negotiation fall apart in a conflict where they were getting hammered over Lebanon, which has nothing to do with them and which the United States never once said was part of the ceasefire, that’s ultimately their choice,” he said.
