Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court has directed the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to control dengue cases and take strict measures against residents who are negligent in preventing water stagnation and clearing waste, as these are major causes of mosquito breeding.
The Court Bench, comprising Chief Justice NV Anjaria and Justice KV Aravind, while hearing a suo motu public interest litigation (PIL) regarding the spread of dengue, instructed state and municipal authorities not to display complacency in matters concerning public health. The Bench emphasised that authorities must take necessary steps to control the spread of dengue.
The Court also reminded the authorities that judicial orders could be applied to control diseases or pandemics that pose a threat to public health, as maintaining health and a clean, disease-free environment is a fundamental right of citizens. The suo motu PIL was filed to prompt the concerned authorities to take action against the spread of dengue, the Bench noted.
While the High Court acknowledged the steps taken by the state government and BBMP, and observed that dengue-related deaths had decreased—indicating a reduction in the intensity and spread of the disease—it reiterated the need for continued vigilance.
Disposing of the PIL, the Bench expressed its appreciation for senior advocate KN Phanindra for effectively assisting the Court in addressing the issue.
