Chamarajanagar: Three men arrested in connection with the killing of a tiger in the Male Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary near Pachchedoddi village in Hanur taluk have been remanded to five days’ custody of the forest department.

The accused Pachemallu, Ganesh, and Shampu were produced before the Hanur court on Saturday. Judicial Magistrate Kavyashree ordered that the trio be handed over to forest officials for five days of custody and adjourned the further hearing of the case.

Forest officials have so far identified seven persons involved in the incident, in which a tiger that had preyed on cattle was allegedly poisoned to death near Pachchedoddi. On Sunday, officials had taken four persons — Pachemallu, Ganesh, Shampu, and Govind Gowda into custody for questioning.

Upon investigation, officials found no direct involvement of Govind Gowda in the crime and released him, while the other three were formally arrested and produced before the court.

Meanwhile, four other accused are reportedly absconding, and efforts are on to trace and arrest them, officials said.

Mangaluru: Two girl students drowned while bathing near the Kolyadakatta dam area of the Gundya river on Friday evening here in the Kadaba Taluk of the district.

The deceased have been identified as Arpita (15) and Sunita (21), both residents of Vimalagiri in Kutrupadi village.

According to reports, five girl students had visited the river along with their friends as it was a holiday. While bathing in the river, the two students reportedly entered a deeper portion of the water without realising the depth and began drowning.

Those accompanying them tried to rescue the duo, but were unsuccessful, leading to the tragedy.

After receiving information about the incident, Kadaba Police Station personnel visited the spot and conducted an inspection. The bodies were later recovered with the help of local residents.
