Bengaluru, August 21: After public outrage over throwing biscuit packs towards the distressed people at Ramanathapura flood victims relief camp in Hassan district, PWD Minister HD Revanna sought the apology of the people of the state on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters at Vidhana Soudha here, the Minister said that “I have neither done it purposefully nor I have such mentality. The women and children sitting far away from him at the room were seeking the biscuits. As I could not go there and give them the biscuits, I threw the biscuits at them. When the incident happened, all media people were there. But it was reported the next day because media people have love towards me. Why didn’t they make the news on the same day”, he asked.

“Not all distressed people in the relief camp are rich. Majority of them are poor. I have been visiting the flood affected areas and reviewing the relief works day and night. But I don’t know what happened. People have started campaign against me in social media”, he expressed his displeasure.

“I’m not the incharge of Kodagu district. But I am supporting them. Union Ministers have not responded to the problems of the people. At this moment, I have attended the people. Now, the BJP leaders have been making allegations against me and politicizing the issue. Let us do politics during election time. But it is not the right time for politics”, he said.

Puttur (Karnataka), Nov 26: Four people have been arrested for allegedly disposing of a Dalit labourer’s body negligently in Puttur taluk of Dakshina Kannada district, police said on Tuesday.

The deceased, Shivappa (70), a resident of Keremoole near Sullia, worked as an assistant mason at Tauro Cement Fabrication Unit in Salmara village. He reportedly collapsed and died during work hours on November 16.

Instead of providing medical assistance or notifying his family, the factory owner, Henry Tauro, allegedly loaded Shivappa’s body onto a pickup truck and dumped it near his home, placing it on wooden logs by the roadside, according to police.

The incident sparked outrage among Dalit organisations in Puttur, including the Adi Dravida Samaja Seva Sangha, who demanded a thorough investigation.

Protests over delays in apprehending the accused intensified public pressure, leading to the arrests of Tauro, his son Kiran, their assistant Prakash, and a mason named Stany.

According to a complaint lodged by Shivappa's son-in-law, the accused brought Shivappa home unresponsive on the evening of November 16. He was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

A case has been registered under the Prevention of Atrocities Against Dalits Act, and investigations are underway to establish the cause of death and examine allegations of mishandling the victim’s body, police added.
