Bengaluru: One of the main suppliers of tomatoes from June to September in India, Kolar Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) has witnessed a downslide resulting in high prices of tomatoes across the country.

Farmers have pointed out the decline in the yield of tomatoes to tomato leaf curl virus disease in Kolar and the nearby tomato- growing areas, reported Deccan Herald.

A farmer told DH that they typically have 15 rounds of harvest during monsoon but only 3-5 rounds will be done this time as the plants have been hit by the virus and are drying up. She added that she was anticipating 9000 boxes of harvest from her three-acre field. However, she has to now settle for only 1800 boxes.

A report by ICAR-IIHR scientists based on a field visit verified that the virus has hit hard to more than 50 percent of the tomatoes in Kolar.

Kumaraswamy SR, Deputy Director of Horticulture (Kolar) told DH that high temperature and infrequent rains have resulted in the widespread multiplication of white flu which transmits leaf curl disease in almost all areas of Kolar and Chikkaballapur. He stated that this is the peak season in Kolar and the virus has hit farmers and consumers alike. Furthermore, he mentioned that they are motivating farmers to diversify crops.
