Shivamogga: Three youngsters who had been riding on a bike were killed on the spot and a fourth rider on a second bike was injured grievously in an accident near Kallihal-Arahatolalu village of Bhadravathi taluk in the district involving the two bikes and a truck.
The deceased riders are identified as Vikas (18), Yashwanth (17) and Shashank (17), who were residents of Hale Jambaragatta. The injured rider is identified as Basavaraj, a resident of Aradottu village of Bhadravathi taluk, who is now undergoing treatment at the McGann Hospital, Shivamogga.
Basavaraj had been riding from Kaimara to Kallihalla while the truck and the other bike were coming down the road from the opposite direction. The youngsters on one bike, in an attempt to overtake the truck, lurched forward, but ended up colliding with the bike Basavaraj was riding on. The riders are learned to have lost control of the bike and fallen on the road, following which, the truck ran over the riders. The trio died on the spot but the truck driver is learned to have escaped from the accident spot.
A case has been booked by the Holehonnur Police officers, who are investigating the matter.

Mumbai (PTI): Police have arrested a man and seized over 500 grams of heroin worth Rs 2.54 crore in the illicit market from him in Mumbai, officials said on Friday.
The police's Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) made the drug seizure in Santacruz in the western suburbs. The operation was conducted by the Kandivali unit of the ANC on Thursday as part of a special crackdown against drug trafficking in the area, they said.
Acting on specific inputs, an ANC team conducted a raid in Santacruz (East) and intercepted a man. During a search, the team recovered 508 grams of high-grade heroin from his possession, an official said.
The seized contraband, a highly addictive, opioid drug derived from morphine, is estimated to be worth Rs 2.54 crore in the international market, he informed.
Following the seizure, a case was registered against the man under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and he was formally placed under arrest in the early hours of Friday.
The police are currently investigating the source of the drug and trying to identify the intended recipients of the consignment, he said.
