Chitradurga: In a tragic incident, two persons died, and 21 others were hospitalized after drinking contaminated water in Kavadigarhatti village under city limits on Tuesday.

The deceased have been identified as Manjula (23) and Raghu (24). While Manjula died in a hospital in the city, Raghu died in a Bengaluru hospital.

Meanwhile, those who fell ill were immediately admitted to local private and government hospitals, and hospitals in Davangere and Bengaluru, informed district superintendent of police K. Parshuram.

For the past few days, the Municipal Council and the Gram Panchayat jointly arranged for drinking water supply in Kavadigarahatti village and the surrounding areas, but the villagers alleged that the water was being supplied without purification despite being contaminated.

The villagers speaking to the District Superintendent of Police K. Parasuram, who had arrived at the mortuary to see the dead body of the young woman, complained that even though the drinking water was contaminated, the concerned officials supplied the same water, which led to the tragic incident. The villagers further demanded the SP that action should be taken against the officials and that the Deputy Commissioner should visit the hospital and said that they would cremate the dead body of the woman only if their above demands are fulfilled.

District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr. Ranganath and Senior Police Officer K. Parasuram visited the village of Kavadigarahatti and conducted an inspection.

Budapest/Washington: US Vice President J D Vance has said that Lebanon was never included in the ceasefire understanding with Iran, describing the confusion as a “legitimate misunderstanding”.

Speaking to reporters before departing from Hungary, Vance said, “I think the Iranians thought that the ceasefire included Lebanon and it just didn’t. We never made that promise.”

He stressed that the United States had not included Lebanon in the scope of the ceasefire at any stage.

His remarks come amid continued Israeli strikes in Lebanon, where more than 200 people were reported killed, even as ceasefire talks between Iran and the US move forward.

Vance said Israel had “offered … to check themselves a little bit in Lebanon because they want to make sure that our negotiation is successful”.

He warned that if Iran allows the situation in Lebanon to affect the negotiations, it could derail the talks.

“If Iran wants to let this negotiation fall apart in a conflict where they were getting hammered over Lebanon, which has nothing to do with them and which the United States never once said was part of the ceasefire, that’s ultimately their choice,” he said.
