Bengaluru: Amidst the controversies surrounding the claims of fringe Hindu groups that have labeled several mosques and Muslim shrines in the country have been temples initially, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has now laid the claim on another Muslim shrine in Karnataka.

VHP and Sri Ram Sene have now claimed that Peer Pasha Dargah in Karnataka’s Basavakalyan was once an Anubhava Mantapa – a socio-religious abode founded by 12th-century social reformer Basavanna.

The VHP has called on the state government to intervene in the matter and has also called for a protest in Bidar with several Lingayat pontiffs offering support to the protest.

Speaking to reporters in Kalaburagi, Sri Ram Sene State President Siddalinga Swami alleged that the dargah was built over the Lingayat shrine during the Hyderabad Nizam’s period. The outfit claimed to have documental evidence to prove that the shrine was dedicated to followers of the Lingayat faith, founded by Basavanna.

Prominent Lingayat pontiff from Belagavi’s Hukkeri Hire Matha has called the Dargah a Hindu shrine while another group All India Veeraishaiva Mahasabha has also offered support to VHP and Sri Ram Sene.

Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai whose state has been the epicenter of communal issues over the past few months has assured to seek a report on the claims and said his government will ascertain facts based on documents.

Budapest/Washington: US Vice President J D Vance has said that Lebanon was never included in the ceasefire understanding with Iran, describing the confusion as a “legitimate misunderstanding”.

Speaking to reporters before departing from Hungary, Vance said, “I think the Iranians thought that the ceasefire included Lebanon and it just didn’t. We never made that promise.”

He stressed that the United States had not included Lebanon in the scope of the ceasefire at any stage.

His remarks come amid continued Israeli strikes in Lebanon, where more than 200 people were reported killed, even as ceasefire talks between Iran and the US move forward.

Vance said Israel had “offered … to check themselves a little bit in Lebanon because they want to make sure that our negotiation is successful”.

He warned that if Iran allows the situation in Lebanon to affect the negotiations, it could derail the talks.

“If Iran wants to let this negotiation fall apart in a conflict where they were getting hammered over Lebanon, which has nothing to do with them and which the United States never once said was part of the ceasefire, that’s ultimately their choice,” he said.
